Challenges & Requirements

During gelatin production, fine suspended particles, fibers, and colloidal impurities significantly affect the final product’s transparency and purity. The customer’s raw gelatin solution exhibited a relatively high turbidity of approximately 46.83 NTU, and their existing filtration process was unable to achieve the desired clarity.
The customer required a solution that could:

●  Significantly reduce turbidity and improve clarity
●  Maintain stable filtration efficiency and throughput
●  Ensure no harmful residues are introduced, allowing for subsequent active substance testing


Solution

To meet these requirements, Great Wall Filtration’s technical team conducted filtration trials using:

●  A vertical filter unit (filtration area: 0.0082 m²)
●  SCP-336 filter sheets (retention rating: 0.2–0.4 μm)

This combination was selected to effectively remove fine particulates while maintaining high flow performance.

Experimental Procedure

Equipment Preparation The filtration system was cleaned using 5% NaOH and 5% HCl, followed by rinsing with purified water until the pH reached 7–7.5.
Filter Sheet Preparation SCP-336 filter sheets were pre-flushed with purified water at 50 L/m² to remove surface fibers and dust.
Sample Preparation A 5% gelatin solution was prepared (5 g gelatin + 95 ml water), heated to 65°C, stirred, and filtered at approximately 50°C.
Filtration & Testing
●  Filtrate was collected in 100 ml fractions (total 500 ml)
●  Filtration time, pressure, and flow rate were recorded
●  Turbidity before and after filtration was measured
